An integral part of Perth society for over 30 years, woven into the tapestry of mixed cultures and different tastes is the melt-in-your-mouth and heart warming story of one woman, an immigrant from Sweden and the magic she brought with her.

Now sit back and enjoy a little taste, an entrée of The Miss Maud Story.....
'My love of travelling has taken me across the globe including journeys through Europe, USA, Africa, the Middle and Far East. Fatefully my travels finally brought me to Perth.
I fell in love with the sunny disposition of the people, the long golden beaches, not to mention the wonderful weather. I simply could not leave.
But how I missed the warm, inviting restaurants and quaint little sidewalk cafés of Sweden. And never more, than when my mother arrived from Stockholm for a visit.
Where could I take her for a nice lunch or a splendid afternoon tea? I yearned for rich Swedish coffee and traditional open-faced Swedish sandwiches like the Shrimp Boat and Gangplank. Back then my mother and I had to settle for a counter meal at the local pub. Not quite where a couple of ladies would go to enjoy each other’s company. I decided it was time to bring a little taste of Sweden to Perth.
In 1971 “Miss Maud” was born. We opened our doors in City Arcade (today named Carillon City). This was a genuine Swedish Pastry House with the heart of my grandmother’s kitchen, the place I had spent many hours watching, smelling, tasting and baking wonderful delights.
Perth fell in love with my Swedish culinary magic. We conjured up so many delicious foods and pastries, cakes and tortes. People could even watch the master pastry chef at work in our tiny bakery through a small viewing window, much like the bakery near my home in Stockholm.
Two years later I opened the Miss Maud Smörgåsbord Restaurant on the corner of Pier and Murray st. Another first for Perth and many more Swedish delicacies arrived on the local culinary scene. Smörgåsbord translates into English as “Butter Goose table”. On the Miss Maud “Butter Goose Table” we took delight in serving traditional Swedish dishes such as home made pates, pickled herrings, eel, Jansons, mimosa salads and of course my mothers meatballs (strictly to her recipe, of course) and much more .
Warm welcoming hospitality, just as I had experienced it back home. That was over 30 years ago. Today we’re still delighting the people of Perth. Now with 14 Swedish Pastry Houses (in major shopping centres), a Swedish Boutique Hotel (next door to the Smörgåsbord Restaurant & Pastry House) and a 24 hour Bake-House operation.
The people of Perth have embraced the magic that was my inheritance. My wonderful team of over 400 staff are dedicated to treating our guests lavishly, serving with love and joy. So my dream came true. To give Australia a taste of the best of Sweden.
Please linger a while and feast your eyes on the wonderful world of Miss Maud. Then come into one of our stores and experience it for yourself. I know you too, will be delighted. I look forward to treating you and your family to the magic of Miss Maud.
