Strong coffees were in high demand last night as official bean counters worked into the wee hours, tallying the final results of the Miss Maud Coffee Bean Poll on the 2008 WA State Election, announced this morning at a special morning tea party at the Miss Maud Swedish Restaurant in Perth.

Thirty one thousand, four hundred and sixty five (31,465) people from across metropolitan Perth - all devotees of coffee and conversation - had cast a vote in the Miss Maud Coffee Bean beakers at Miss Maud's 17 coffee houses which have been gauging Perth’s caffeine and excitement levels over the past three weeks during the lead up to the state election.

The official results put the Liberal party ahead by a couple of short blacks showing them as the favourites  – but not without tough competition from the Labor Party who trailed just a couple of percentage points behind at the final bean count.  A strong late show of strength in the Miss Maud brew was the Greens, with 15.5% of the vote.

More than 200 customers, business and community leaders gathered to witness the official bean count, which was inspected by prominent bean counters from WHKHorwath to ensure that the books were not cooked with the results shown on a massive 500 piece cake in the shape of Western Australia, later donated to Mission Australia.

The Miss Maud Coffee Bean Poll is a tradition which has had great success in stirring up a massive community conversation with many surprisingly accurate predictions in past elections, though  Miss Maud, aka Maud Edmiston, President of the Morning Tea Party of WA and Bean Polling Australia, said the intention of the poll was to get people talking and thinking about their choices, and accuracy was not the key factor, though there did seem to be some sort of magic happening in her coffee houses, when people started having conversations - and hearing conversations - about the issues of the day.  "It helps clarify their thinking, and makes them want to be involved," she said.

Miss Maud said the poll was successful because of its simple touch and that it was fun and open to everyone – not just people of voting age.
“Our customers love coffee and conversation, and we wanted to provide them with a little more stimulus to have their say with the rest of the community. We started this in 1996 for the Federal Election. There were just 15,000 beans then and we were amazed by the response.  Today we have doubled those numbers and our customers are able to enjoy a fantastic community conversation that is bigger than any official poll, she said.

“It gets families talking. It gets teenagers talking. It even gets strangers talking. It’s a simple way of showing that every opinion matters and that each view together makes up the community view. It has become a wonderful West Australian tradition.

"Who would have thought that the humble coffee bean could have such an impact on our daily lives?” Miss Maud asks.

SNAP BEAN POLL ASKS - WHAT MATTERS MOST TO YOU?
(1006 people polled)

In a delicious Snap Bean Poll at the Pier Street Restaurant where guests celebrated the results of the Miss Maud Coffee Bean Poll, Miss Maud invited her guests and supporters to say what was on their mind.

WHAT MATTERS MOST TO YOU?, she asked, putting yet another appetising offering of the menu to provide food for thought for them and for community leaders. The coffee beans stacked up as follows - in a good sized poll that once again was designed to 'stimulate community conversations' over a coffee at Miss Maud.
